I was reading a book on Eastern Philosophy which talked about the life of the Sannyasins. About how they
choose to give up all their possessions, house, land, friends and family and then wander the world in search
of Enlightenment. In the process of giving everything up, the world becomes their home and every person their
brother or sister... through giving up a few possessions, they gain the world.
This reminded me of something that Bernard Moitessier once wrote "I am a citizen of the most beautiful nation
on earth. A nation whose laws are harsh yet simple, a nation that never cheats, which is immense without borders,
where life is lived in the present. In this limitless nation, this nation of wind, light and peace, there is no
other ruler besides the sea." Going to sea embodied the life of the Sannyasin, and therefore was the perfect name
for the boat!
When documenting the boat, I was asked to pick a hailing port. I chose the island of Monhegan Maine, because it
is a place of immense power and beauty. Ten miles off the coast of Maine, it has been a home to artists and free
spirits since the early 1600s (earlier considering the Native Americans who originally inhabited the island). It
is a place I still go to for rest and reflection, and hope, one day, to sail Sannyasin, much as Joshua Slocum
did more than a hundred years ago.
